Melasma

Melasma Laser in Busan, Korea | JRYN Seomyeon
Melasma Laser · Asian Skin Protocol

For the pigment
that other lasers,
cannot reach.

Melasma is the most challenging pigmentation to treat — too aggressive, and you trigger rebound darkening; too gentle, and nothing changes. JRYN Seomyeon uses three Q-switched and laser toning platforms — Helios, Revlite, and Clarity — in low-fluence repeated protocols specifically designed for Asian skin's sensitivity to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

What is Melasma Laser Toning?

Patient. Persistent. Precisely calibrated.

Melasma laser toning uses Q-switched 1064nm Nd:YAG laser at very low fluence (energy level), delivered repeatedly over many sessions. Unlike high-energy single treatments that can worsen melasma, laser toning gradually weakens melanocyte activity while triggering minimal inflammation — the key to managing melasma in Asian skin without triggering post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. At JRYN Seomyeon, we use three FDA-approved platforms: Helios III (Korean innovation, gentlest), Revlite (Cynosure imported, balanced), and Clarity (Lutronic, premium with Adaptive Cooling). Treatment is a marathon, not a sprint — 8–15 sessions over 4–6 months produces the best results.

How it works

The science ,
simplified.

Understanding the mechanism helps you set realistic expectations and choose the right brand for your goals.

01

Pigmentation diagnosis

Dr. Lee differentiates melasma from sun spots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), and ABNOM. Each requires a different laser approach. Wood's lamp examination clarifies depth.

02

Topical numbing

Numbing cream is applied for 15 minutes before treatment. Most fillers also contain lidocaine, so injection discomfort is minimal.

03

Low-energy laser toning

Helios III, Revlite, or Clarity Q-switched lasers at low fluence. Multiple gentle passes rather than aggressive single sessions. No downtime, mild redness only.

04

Instant result, 2-week settling

Results are visible immediately. Minor swelling and firmness resolves over 1–2 weeks, revealing the final natural-looking contour. Effect lasts 12–18 months.

Frequently asked

Melasma Laser
questions.

How much does melasma laser toning cost in Busan?
At JRYN Seomyeon: Helios III toning ₩100,000 per session, Revlite ₩120,000, Clarity ₩150,000. Package of 6 sessions ₩500,000–800,000. Includes consultation and follow-up.
Why is melasma so hard to treat?
Melasma is hormone-influenced and stubborn. Aggressive lasers can worsen it (rebound). The Korean approach uses low-energy "laser toning" — gentle, repeated sessions that gradually lighten without provoking the pigment.
How many sessions until I see results?
Initial improvement at 4 sessions (8 weeks). Significant improvement at 8–12 sessions. Complete control requires ongoing monthly maintenance — melasma is chronic, not curable.
Is laser toning safe for Asian skin?
Yes — when low energy is used. JRYN follows Korean dermatology protocols specifically designed for Asian skin (Fitzpatrick III–IV). We avoid IPL for melasma as it can worsen the condition.
What's the difference between Helios III, Revlite, and Clarity?
Helios III (Korean) — most popular in Korea, gentle toning. Revlite (US) — original Q-switched gold standard. Clarity (Korean) — combines Q-switched and long-pulse, versatile. Dr. Lee selects based on your specific pigmentation.
Do I need to take oral medications?
Tranexamic acid (oral or topical) significantly improves outcomes. We typically recommend 250mg twice daily during treatment, with regular blood work to monitor safety.
Will sun exposure undo my treatment?
Yes — completely. Sun exposure triggers melasma. Daily SPF50+ broad-spectrum, sun avoidance during peak hours, and physical sun protection (hat, umbrella) are non-negotiable.
Can melasma come back after treatment?
Yes — melasma always has a tendency to recur, especially during pregnancy, hormonal changes, or sun exposure. Maintenance treatments and strict sun protection are essential.
Are there alternatives to laser?
Topical treatments (hydroquinone, retinoids, kojic acid), chemical peels, and oral tranexamic acid all help. Laser toning is one part of a comprehensive approach, not a standalone solution.
Do you offer English-speaking consultations for melasma?
Yes. Send photos in natural lighting (no flash) via WhatsApp or LINE. Dr. Lee will diagnose your pigmentation type and recommend a treatment plan with realistic expectations.
